The Monroe Legacy - G.4 Chapter 16 - Something Old

She had the drowning nightmare the night before her wedding and was trying not to read into it. It didn't come naturally to her. She got ready telling herself nothing was wrong, that it was just a stress response ahead of a big life event, but the dark voice in the back of her head kept telling her there was more than one way to drown.

Lillia loved Noki. She wanted to marry him, to start there family but she couldn't shake the feeling that their comfortable little bubble was actually just the inside of a huge barrel wave, headed towards an inevitable crash. Fortunately her mother and Eva knew her well enough not to try and make her talk about it, instead conversing merrily together about the best of Noki and Lillia's past, their hopes for them and joking about the trials of marriage. With them in her corner, Lillia made it to the venue feeling almost calm and ready for the next chapter.

Her dad and Oscar were waiting to lead her in, and Rose was peeking impatiently out to get a look at the dress. They'd kept things small, wanting to live within their means and celebrate their hard-won happiness with only those closest to them.

She'd made it almost all the way down the aisle, finding strength in the warmth on Noki's face, the solid presence of her father beside her when she spotted the stranger in the crowd. The woman looked at her with curiosity, confusion even, before arranging her face into a neutral impression whose similarity to Lillia's almost-husband told her who she must be. Noki's mother had come to Lucky Palms.

She stumbled slightly, blushing and thrown, sure that Mrs Moon must be judging her, finding her lacking and the panic was back.

Monroe Legacy Gen 5 Heir Poll

 Hello Humans

While I'm still scooching through writing the interrim, I've arrived at the point where I basically need to decide my heir for Gen 5 for it not to be a colossal effort/get the kiddo prepped. Therefore I'm doing a slightly early heir poll on the grounds it's also kinda fairer for the older kids not to get more attention which is usually my failure :D

Gen 5 is going to have a mystery element that connects (loosely) to the Gen 1/2 Arc so there are things that need setting up.

I aged all the kiddos up to teen for a picture and have plopped them below with their 4 unique traits. Whoever wins will have adventurer as their fifth. I tweaked Lillia and Noki's genes to be a bit more interesting when I rebooted the legacy and I'm really happy with how the kids turned out - possibly why I ended up with 5 :S

Option 1: Rumi Monroe

Full Name: Rumi Blaise Monroe

Traits: Virtuoso, Good, Vegetarian, Heavy Sleeper

Vibe: Rumi is a drummer, a bit of a hippie and a pretty laid back chick. If she wins the vote she'd pursue the mystery on location, living nomadically and trying to stay grounded, despite the madness.

Option 2: Asa Monroe

Full name: Asa Gray Monroe

Traits: Loner, couch potato, slob, compute whiz

Vibe: If Asa is heir, he'll try and use tech to progress the mystery, using whatever parts of the internet he can to avoid having to physically dig. Ew. He will be a reluctant explorer.

Option 3: Matisse Monroe

Full name: Matisse Maev Monroe

Traits: Artistic, brave, excitable, technophobe

Vibe: Matisse couldn't be more different from her big brother, she'll pursue the mystery with great energy, if not much finesse. Her hands on approach may put her risk but she figures maybe it'll also inspire her great work.

Option 4: Revel Monroe

Full name: Revel Rose Monroe

Traits: Perceptive, unlucky, disciplined, friendly

Vibe: Matisse's twin, Revel has spent a lot of time cleaning up after her impulsive sister but it's never gotten her ahead. In pursuing the mystery, she believes that order and preparation will see her triumph, if only her luck will hold.

Option 5: Hero Monroe

Full name: Hero Shay Monroe

Traits: Rebel, eccentric, heat lover, nurturing

Vibe: Hero has always gone her own way, and she doesn't really care if it's legal or not. To solve this mystery and protect her family, she'll not only think outside the box, she'll burn the box down.

The Monroe Legacy - G.4 Chapter 15 - Rose Intervenes

In all the great love stories, the destined lovers come together in a shower of sparks. Stars align, shoulders bump in a coffee line and the twists and turns are gentle and minimally painful. Lillia called bullshit.

She'd had a lot of boyfriends. Sometimes it had been romantic but more often than not it had been transactional, calculated; the elite of two circles extending their status, ensuring some meaningless title, proving she could get what she wanted. And now?

Whatever it was she had with Noki was certainly not rose petals and sunset strolls. She loved him. Lillia could admit that to herself now, and she was pretty sure he felt the same but they'd both hurt so many people it would never feel the pure and exciting rush of storybook love. And anyway, they were "just friends".

Since he'd moved to Lucky Palms they had spent a lot of time together, late nights at Sparky's, TV binges and dinner at his place. He'd even briefly met her parents and joined Lillia and Rose for a quick drink. From the outside it seemed they'd found an easy friendship, inside Lillia felt she was at war with herself.

Surely nothing good could come from giving into the feelings that had torn her life apart? Wouldn't her and Noki crossing that line prove right all the awful things she'd heard whispered in her last semester at college? And her family would never approve. Rose would never truly approve...

In the end it was Rose who made it happen.

Watching her idiot cousin and ex circle each other like self-flagellating martyrs had been fun for a few weeks but now it was pathetic. Anyone could see they wanted to be together and honestly? It was getting annoying to try not to yell "JUST KISS HIM" in Lillia's face every time she turned up for a coffee or a drink looking all sad and faraway.

Rose had decided that Mugsy was going to marry her and Mugsy was fine with that. Rose did not want morose Lillia at her engagement party so she hatched a plan.

Lillia walked into the empty bar with a puzzled look. Had she got the wrong time. An awkward throat-clear alerted her to Noki's presence.

"Rose isn't with you? She said 5PM..." He looked equally confused.

"Um- I thought this was supposed to be her party". Lillia struggled to connect the dots and was interrupted by the snick of a letter being slid down the bar by the barkeep.

"Rose told me to give you this," the woman said, clearly enjoying her part in the plot. "She said to tell you that she's bored of the 'will they wont they' and you can't come to her actual party until you 'sort your shit out'.

Lillia's cheeks burned. It was so Rose. She forced herself to look at Noki and saw the same scared, hopeful look dancing in his eyes as was swirling in her chest. He held out a hand.

"You wanna dance on it?" he said. And she did.

Everything and nothing changed. Lillia and Noki did the same things, but there was an honesty in the space between them. They'd agreed without really saying as much to take it slow, so there was no mad tumble into bed but where before they'd had stepped back from a brush of fingers while walking, a head on a shoulder during a movie they now leaned in.

Noki knew all her secrets, her worst parts and he wasn't going anywhere. She knew all his, from the mad family to the disaster of his finances and she was still in it too. For both of them this was new territory.

Rose claimed to be disappointed there had been no fireworks, no steamy bar bathroom hookup but Lillia could tell she wasn't really. Nobody was disappointed. Her parents hadn't even blinked when she'd told them her and Noki were feeling things out romantically, for the first time in a long time Lillia wasn't hiding anything from anyone, there were no games being played, it was easy.

Noki told her he loved her over beers they hadn't waited to get cold while watching a hospital drama. Lillia told him back after she'd had a second to collect herself while refilling the popcorn. Knowing it and saying it were two different things. Letting herself feel it was yet another.

It felt right though, another clear truth in the increasingly simple life she was building.

With things falling into place Lillia finally knew what she wanted to pursue. She signed up to a business course which, along with her major in sport would enable her to work with young athletes on building sustainable careers. Maybe all the bad things that had happened to her, all the bad things she'd done all on her own weren't the end of the world, but just shaping a new one. For the first time Lillia felt like maybe she had something worthwhile to add to her family's legacy. She might not be a star, a genius or even a particularly nice person, but she had kept going, kept learning.

Reading back over some of her family's journals she supposed persistence was what had really defined each of the heirs before her. Maybe her trials had been self-constructed but that didn't mean overcoming them was meaningless. She could build something better for her kids. Her family would support her in doing that and Noki's were out of the picture.

They had a clear shot, a real chance. That was better than some bullshit fairy tale happy ever after and nothing was going to get in their way.

The Monroe Legacy - G.3. Chapter 20 - Slipping Through My Fingers

If Gray slept any better in the year which followed it was only because he was too exhausted to stay awake any longer. Between Flynn's cries, Lillia's shrieking gaggle of friends, worry about Casper and his dreams it was a wonder that he got any sleep.

Rachel looked just at tired and they were talking more seriously about selling the restaurant, though it had long been their dream the funds would allow them to send Casper to a school where his needs would be met, they could both work shorter hours too if they worked for somebody else.

The decision was made for them when a celebrated European chef moved to the city and approached them offering more money that they had dared hope for. By the time Flynn turned one the paperwork was final and Gray and Rachel were saddened but quietly relieved. The restaurant had been like their fourth child and just now they could barely handle three. Rachel picked up a breakfast shift at a local brasserie whilst Gray was interviewing for a couple of head chef jobs at upmarket restaurants.

Their new flexibility had partly been set up with the idea that they could help Eva with childcare and enable her to go to college part time, but Eva had other ideas. When Rachel brought up some Afternoon classes and her availability to babysit, Eva kindly but firmly refused.

'Flynn is my son and I want to teach him what he needs to know. I don't want to be one of those teen moms who lets their parents handle everything.'

Rachel shrugged  'Eva you're a great mother and Flynn is a wonderful boy but you deserve more than a high school diploma and endless play dates.'

Eva smiled fondly at the woman she had come to view as both a mother and a best friend.

'I know I do Rach, and I'm not giving up on me. Hayden gave me two good things; Flynn and the idea that I can do better than community college. I'm studying while Flynn naps, every day I learn more and realise how much more I'm capable of. Once Flynn is in school, I'm going to go to an Ivy League College, I'm going to chase a dream that I didn't even know I had until it was threatened.'

Rachel could see the steel and determination in the young mother's eyes, not even 21, Eva had dealt with more than most people did in a lifetime and she was so strong, she hoped that her children would grow up to be as courageous as their big sister.

Lillia certainly wasn't a shrinking violet, every day she seemed to become more popular, the play date requests were  constant but Gray found that his daughter refused most of them, she rarely socialised without the Flowers in attendance.

When his daughter returned from her first unsupervised shopping trip, an eleventh birthday treat with Rachel on standby in the coffee shop, he was staggered by the change effected by a day and a hundred dollar gift card.

Gone was the little girl who had brightened up his dark moods when Eva was missing. Gone was the big-sister lookalike who wanted nothing more than pink stripes in her hair and to play soccer every day.

This Lillia was a beautiful teenager and a complete stranger to him. Standing slightly self-consciously between her chattering, giggling friends she looked for a moment like she would rather be anywhere else, her shoulders tight and her eyes flickering from side to side. As Daisy began to talk about some cute guy at the mall, Rose nudged Lillia unintentionally and the mask snapped back down. The threesome were soon tucked up in their customary places on the sofa and chattering away as only teenage girls can, everything bright, exciting and wonderful.

Gray wondered if he'd ever see that quiet, sweet natured girl again or whether this sparkling, larger than life character was who his daughter had always been waiting to be.

Gray hoped that maybe a little of Lillia's social ease would rub off on Casper but if anything the constant presence of the Flowers in their home seemed to cause the shy child to keep more to himself than ever. Gray and Rachel tried to make him as comfortable as possible, limiting Lillia to hosting her friends once a week and continuing to build the structures that Casper's behaviourist insisted would help him learn to manage his obsessive behaviours and feel secure in social interactions.

Sometimes they felt as if they had turned a corner, he would come willingly to dinner and voluntarily talk about his latest potion idea or something he'd noticed at school (while quiet he was very perceptive). But the next day he would get frustrated with not being able to find the book he wanted or find himself in a situation at school he didn't understand and then he would shut down, withdrawing to the comfort of Tia's company and his books.

Casper's move to Oakfield Prep school in the Autumn helped in some ways, the class sizes were small and they had tutors who had worked extensively with autism spectrum disorders as well as the academic faculty. Casper's intelligence was quickly spotted and found space to flourish here, he also loved the fact that everyone was in uniform and it was like Harry Potter!

After a term, Gray was a little disappointed that Casper hadn't made any friends, or even mentioned any of his classmates by name. Rachel kept reminding himself what their doctor had said, there was no "cure" for Casper, no linear path for improvement or change, he was a perfectly normal kid who found different things of value and different things intimidating from his siblings. It wouldn't do to measure him against anyone else's ideas of success and failure, he'd create his own rules.

For now they could celebrate that Casper would reach his academic potential and that he was continuing to bond with his family. These things alone were a huge triumph.

Despite the financial stability that selling The Lonely Cactus had brought them, Gray and Rachel missed that restaurant. The new owner had changed the name, refurbished and although it stood in the same place it always had it was no longer the place they'd dreamed of. Rachel had ideas to become stakeholders in the little bistro she was now working at but Gray felt as if he had to secure the children's futures before he could decide what was next for him. Eva was already a woman and a mother and Lillia was growing so fast. Even Caspar seemed to be an old head on young shoulders and the time had come to plan for them first and himself second, running any kind of restaurant was crazy difficult.

Gray had though that choosing his heir would be impossible, as if he were choosing a favourite but actually in the end it had been simple. His mother had told him that she hadn't struggled in the end, he'd never believed her but now he understood. There was one of his children who would both benefit the most from the legacy and who needed it most. One who would use this opportunity and this challenge to see themselves more clearly.

As Eva's 21st birthday was approaching he decided to wait on the announcement, she'd had so many milestones missed or overshadowed by other events that she deserved the day to herself. Even little Flynn was well-behaved and quiet as they sang and lit the candles.

After thinking a while on her wish, Eva made it, hoping only for happiness and success for her and her son. Later that night she walked out in the garden alone, she couldn't escape the feeling that everything was going to change now. She was an adult, she had a son, it was terrifying but also exciting.

Eva was so caught up in her thoughts that the voice from the gate made her jump.

'Hey. Happy Birthday Evie.... You haven't changed at all.'

Her heart racing she turned slowly and locked eyes with Hayden. Eva felt those old butterflies stir even as she strode towards him, jaw set and eyes blazing.

'What the hell are you doing here.'

Hello lovely readers!

Skills/Hobbies: Getting in/out of trouble. Hanging with Lillia. Anything on a computer. Piercings.

Lifetime Wish: Jack of All Trades

Bio: Eva's childhood was a rocky one, her mother Aisha used her as a tool to manipulate her dad into marriage and when it failed to win his attention she took Eva and ran leaving Gray with no idea where they were or even if they were alive. Reunited with her father at 13 with a caseload of issues and anger, Eva has come a long way.

Summer-school pending she should have the grades for college though a poorly timed love affair may set her back by nine months or so...

Lillia Hallie Monroe

Age: 9 (aged up for pic)

Traits: Athletic, Brave, Slob, Workaholic

Skills/Hobbies: Sports! Swimming, soccer, athletics, cheer and hanging with besties Daisy and Rose

Lifetime Wish: tbc.

Bio: Supposedly the "low maintenance" child, Lillia is Gray's oldest child with wife Rachel. Whilst she's very popular Lillia struggles academically but since dropping some of her elite sport is doing better. She spends most of her time with her two friends Daisy and Rose (collectively known as "The Flowers"). Recently she seems to be changing, gone is the carefree sporty Lillia, she spends a lot of time following Daisy around and keeps trying to drop swimming for ballet, apparently swimming will make her thighs too fat...

Can she maintain her status and her friendships without losing herself and what she believes in?

Casper Jude Monroe

Age: 7

Traits: Genius, Loves the Cold, Shy

Skills/Hobbies: Science, reading Harry Potter, making potions, chatting with Tia (imaginary friend)

Lifetime Wish: tbc.

Bio: Casper is the youngest Monroe and the only boy. He struggled from a young age to connect with other people, relying instead on Tia, his imaginary friend. Starting school revealed him to be exceptionally intelligent but highlighted his social problems. He was recently diagnosed as suffering from Asperger Syndrome and is now receiving the best care his parents can afford. He's few months into treatment and there are signs of improvement though there's still a long way to go, Casper's relationship with his family is improving but he still spends a lot of his time with Tia,

The Monroe Legacy - G.3. Chapter 17 - Blind Spots

Rachel's insistence that Casper's obsession with Tia was a phase he would grow out of took a hit when his fifth birthday and the start of school arrived with no sign of Tia's exit from family life. So adamant was Casper that Tia was real that he wouldn't even have a birthday party after his parents tried to reason that they didn't need to add Tia's name to the invite or buy her a cake.

Whilst they didn't mind Casper being a bit lost in his imagination his attachment to Tia was becoming a problem. He would get upset and angry any time they refused to set a place for Tia at the table or forget to wait for her to get  in the car.

Rachel made a preliminary visit to child psychologist, returning furious after "that loony old battle-axe" tried to tell her that her son's imaginary friend was a coping mechanism made necessary by his father's absence in his formative weeks and an underlying favouritism towards the female children on the house.

Whilst it was true that Gray had missed his son's first ten days, she hadn't been constantly there either, thanks to the nature of the NICU and they'd always worked hard to ensure that even when Eva had been at her most demanding, they had compensated accordingly with extra time for Casper.

Gray tried to calm his wife down, to underplay the difficulty that they'd been facing with their son but the fact remained that he lived primarily in a fantasy world he'd created for him and his imaginary friend. School improved things slightly, Casper loved to learn and the access school gave him to information and new ideas seemed to counteract his natural urge to withdraw from situations.

His teachers sent home glowing reports which soothed his parents worries, it seemed that he did interact with other children in a classroom setting though he rarely socialised in the playground. He excelled in science and maths and had little time for art or sport. Casper also became obsessed with Harry Potter, trying numerous times to sneak out of the house in robes and when Gray spoke to him about it settling instead for wearing his "uniform" everyday, he was in Ravenclaw, he insisted.

When he asked for a chemistry set to use at home, to make "potions", Gray was pleased to dig Sienna's old one out of storage. Having this new focus made Casper easier to handle at home, he engaged slightly more with the family (though he mainly tried to use Eva and Lillia as potion testers) and spent less time shut away talking to himself. Tia seemed not to care for chemistry and whilst Casper's insistence that, 'he was doing it for both of them' made no sense to his parents, Gray and Rachel agreed that they'd give it a year, hope the chemistry thing stuck and if Tia was still Casper's only friend at that point they'd go back to another psychologist.

Whilst Casper flew at school and struggled socially, Lillia was the opposite. She had more friends than she really had time for and continued to struggle academically. Between play dates and swim meets she barely had time to do her schoolwork and her GPA fell to a C.

Gray was frustrated with the school, they knew she needed longer to grasp things but as one of their sporting stars they kept cutting her academic hours to make space for training and he could see the toll this was taking on his daughter. Whilst they wanted Lillia to reach her sporting potential she was still too young for such intense training.

Gray and Rachel talked about moving Lillia to a private school where they specialised in small class sizes and different ways of teaching the curriculum but with the restaurant still on such tenuous footing there was no way they could afford it right now.

They settled for pulling her out of some of her sporting activities, leaving only swimming and soccer and coaching her as best they could at home. Lillia sulked, she hated school and missed athletics but at least she now had more time to spend with her friends without having to panic about homework.

Lillia and her cousin Rose, one of Jet's triplets, became especially close. The two girls spent most evenings at one of their houses, Rose preferring the hi-tech modern features of Lillia's house and Lillia loving to hang out with the horses at Jet's ranch.

As the year progressed the two girls grew closer, ruling the school social scene and dominating in extracurriculars too. Rose was head cheerleader of the local youth squad and with Lillia's sporting prowess they became the group to try and get in with. The addition of dance team star Daisy to their little posse earned them the collective name "The flowers" and as they advanced in years so too did their social standing climb.

Rachel was secretly thrilled that her daughter was so popular, she'd always been something of an outcast but swore to herself she would make sure that her daughter would never develop any of the less attractive qualities which the popular crowd had demonstrated in her day. All girls loved to gossip but she was pretty sure it was all harmless.... right?

For now at least Lillia seemed happy enough, her grades were passable and she was growing up well.

As Lillia found her place in the school social structure Eva was growing out of it. Finals were over and she'd just turned eighteen, she was praying that her results would reflect the months of hard graft she'd put into studying with Hayden. He was confident that she would pass, confident to the extent that he'd planned one last session to get her started on her advance reading for freshman year.

When he texted to postpone, Eva felt a sinking in her stomach, she wouldn't even get to say goodbye, he'd just discovered that he'd won a Rhodes scholarship and in a few short months would be setting off to experience life at Cambridge University, England. Eva was sure he would never think of her again.

To her surprise Hayden made contact and rescheduled her send-off session asking her to meet him at the park rather than their usual destination of her dining room table. As hard as Eva tried she couldn't crush the butterflies that this last, out of character, meeting stirred up. She spent longer than usual on her makeup, just in case...

As Eva arrived at the park she started second guessing her outfit choice, she was usually found in a jumper dress so her current ensemble was not in her comfort zone which made the amount of attention the male population if the park were giving her all the harder to process. As she saw Hayden's mouth drop open and his eyes widen, Eva changed her mind. The new look was definitely working.

Their session was awkward, a long way from their usual companionable banter. Eva kept catching Hayden staring at her in a way she had long dreamed he might. Now he was finally taking notice she didn't exactly know what to do with herself. She was used to the kind of guy she could read like a book, who told her she was beautiful and wanted only one thing from her. She knew these guys from her childhood observances of life in Garcia's compound but sometimes used them to prove to herself  that she was desirable and adored, even if only for one night.

Hayden was different. She felt like her usual brazen flirting would scare him off so instead she was just unusually quiet. As they packed away her books and notes Eva's heart sank. She was sure she'd blown her only chance with her inexplicable shyness. So it was a huge surprise when Hayden invited her to his celebration party that weekend.

Eva went with high hopes which were soon crushed. Hayden's pleasure at her arrival was soon buried by his college buddies trying to make him play beer pong and she barely saw him for the hour she stayed. As she left she heard a voice call out,

'Eva. Wait up'

Hayden jogged after her and she kept walking away, trying to keep her tone light as she called back.

'Great party Hayden, have fun in England. I gotta get back for my curfew.'

She was surprised when he caught up with her and more surprised still that he fell in step with her and began to walk her home. They didn't talk about anything important and too soon they arrived at the Monroe's gate.

'I'm going to miss you!' Eva blurted, slapping her hand over her mouth as she realised what she'd said. 'As a friend of course. I mean a tutor. I'll miss... The studying. That's all!'

Hayden looked confused.

'I'm going to miss you too', he replied. 'As a friend. We are friends you know.'

Eva smiled shyly as he continued,

'Sometimes I thought we could even be... Forget it. It's silly'.

Eva's heart started pounding. This was impossible.

'What's silly?' She asked, closing the gap between them almost imperceptibly. 'Hayden you can tell me'. She touched his hand softly with hers, seeing his eyes widen in the darkness and feeling him squeeze her hand as if to check it was real.

'Eva... I.... I just think you're perfect. I mean you're smart and funny and you don't care what people think. God you're beautiful. But I'm leaving and I'm such a nerdy guy I never thought... dammit. Eva if you don't go right now I'm going to try to kiss you'.

She didn't, and he did.
