The Monroe Legacy - G.4 Chapter 17 - Normal People Things

So begin the honeymoon years of the Moon-Monroe household, the period of time that gets brushed over often for the relative dullness of reading the unremarkable happiness of ordinary people. Perhaps, if they'd taken up Mrs Moon's offered papers might have found a way to spin their occasional fight over whose turn it was for laundry or their constant handholding at the grocery store into a story. Then again, had they become "those" Moons, they wouldn't have been doing groceries or laundry, and it was in these small normal spaces that they most enjoyed each other.

Lillia moved into Noki's modern little starter home on the edge of town and they made up for all the time they'd wasted.

Noki's work was predictable and paid the bills, Lillia's career as am agent was still more of a theory than a reality, but that was okay. They had all the time in the world and things that were much more fun than thinking about pensions or savings to occupy their time. They had a couples bowling night every week with Rose and Mugsy which always ended with Noki as a pile of blushing apologies as Rose lovingly ridiculed his playboy past. They had a weekly family dinner at the bistro with Lillia's parents, siblings and the assorted cousins, spouses and old friends that a family of their size always seemed to acquire.

Nobody except Lillia and Noki was surprised when a stubborn bout of stomach flu turned out to be the next fork in the family tree.

They hadn't got round to talking about babies as a specific rather than a definite future plan, but after so long spent waiting to be together, why wait now. Privately they both thought that having a bigger family might be nice. The Moons had always heavily implied to Noki that they thought having more than two children was tacky, unless of course you had failed to have a boy, in which case it was desperate but understandable. Lillia had a raft of cousins but her own childhood had been lonely at home, between the legacy of Eva's disappearance and Caspar's Asperger's, she'd often felt a bit lost.

Still, these were thoughts for the future and for now there were first baby logistics to fit in round the morning sickness, family announcements and work. The long planned bathroom remodel went on hold and the money went on very small socks and enough wash cloths to dry an army of babies... or so they thought.

Noki sent a polite email to his mother, letting her know she was going to be a grandparent, but wasn't surprised not to hear anything back. He was starting to get used to the disappointment of their disinterest in him as anything other than the Moon Petroleum heir, and what had once stabbed now only stung. It helped that after a bumpy start, the Monroes had basically adopted him, and getting to know them, realising that many of them had pasts they regretted and were still accepted was healing him in ways he hadn't really known he'd needed.

It felt right that the text to announce Noki's imminent parenthood came from Lillia's mom, her water having broken in their yard. A long but uncomplicated 36 hours at the hospital sent them home with the best thing they'd done together to date.

Rumi Blaise Monroe changed everything.

They were a noisier, tired-er, messier household, but also sillier and connected in a different way. Noki only had a week off work to soak it in while Lillia decided to wait to complete her final qualification.

Sometimes at his desk, Noki would worry that his girls back home were forgetting about him. Sometimes, home with the baby, Lillia worried that she was forgetting how to do anything aside from keep a baby alive. In the evenings they would each read that worry on each other and talk about it, cry about it, in a way they hadn't before they were exhausted parents with no capacity for subtlety.

Things were working so well, that following a promotion for Noki, it seemed as good a time as ever to add a sibling. Lillia felt like it would be easier to take one longer break from building her reputation as an agent than two shorter ones.

It would be tight, they barely had space for soon-to-be-toddler Rumi and all the clutter that came with that age, but that felt like a delightfully normal problem to have. Gray and Rachel had offered them the legacy house, it had too much room now they were on their own, but Lillia wasn't ready for that yet. She loved living with just her little family in a cosy kind of chaos and she wasn't ready to try and work out how she might make her parents house feel like her own.

Lilla was standing rocking Rumi back to sleep the night the familiar pangs of labour came back. A nervous thrill ran through her and she paused a while before waking Noki.

She loved this. This house, this family, this life they had made, and she was sure that the new baby would only compound that love.

Two days later and hundreds of miles away, an impatient hand crumpled the newspaper, flown in specially from Lucky Palms.

"What kind of name is Asa?" he grumbled to an assistant hovering nervously at the door. The assistant cast about for an answer that wouldn't get them fired but an answer wasn't required.

"At least it's a boy this time" the man concluded, his voice thoughtful. "Please call my wife in. She's going to be making a trip".

The Monroe Legacy - G.4 Chapter 16 - Something Old

She had the drowning nightmare the night before her wedding and was trying not to read into it. It didn't come naturally to her. She got ready telling herself nothing was wrong, that it was just a stress response ahead of a big life event, but the dark voice in the back of her head kept telling her there was more than one way to drown.

Lillia loved Noki. She wanted to marry him, to start there family but she couldn't shake the feeling that their comfortable little bubble was actually just the inside of a huge barrel wave, headed towards an inevitable crash. Fortunately her mother and Eva knew her well enough not to try and make her talk about it, instead conversing merrily together about the best of Noki and Lillia's past, their hopes for them and joking about the trials of marriage. With them in her corner, Lillia made it to the venue feeling almost calm and ready for the next chapter.

Her dad and Oscar were waiting to lead her in, and Rose was peeking impatiently out to get a look at the dress. They'd kept things small, wanting to live within their means and celebrate their hard-won happiness with only those closest to them.

She'd made it almost all the way down the aisle, finding strength in the warmth on Noki's face, the solid presence of her father beside her when she spotted the stranger in the crowd. The woman looked at her with curiosity, confusion even, before arranging her face into a neutral impression whose similarity to Lillia's almost-husband told her who she must be. Noki's mother had come to Lucky Palms.

She stumbled slightly, blushing and thrown, sure that Mrs Moon must be judging her, finding her lacking and the panic was back.

Monroe Legacy Gen 5 Heir Poll

 Hello Humans

While I'm still scooching through writing the interrim, I've arrived at the point where I basically need to decide my heir for Gen 5 for it not to be a colossal effort/get the kiddo prepped. Therefore I'm doing a slightly early heir poll on the grounds it's also kinda fairer for the older kids not to get more attention which is usually my failure :D

Gen 5 is going to have a mystery element that connects (loosely) to the Gen 1/2 Arc so there are things that need setting up.

I aged all the kiddos up to teen for a picture and have plopped them below with their 4 unique traits. Whoever wins will have adventurer as their fifth. I tweaked Lillia and Noki's genes to be a bit more interesting when I rebooted the legacy and I'm really happy with how the kids turned out - possibly why I ended up with 5 :S

Option 1: Rumi Monroe

Full Name: Rumi Blaise Monroe

Traits: Virtuoso, Good, Vegetarian, Heavy Sleeper

Vibe: Rumi is a drummer, a bit of a hippie and a pretty laid back chick. If she wins the vote she'd pursue the mystery on location, living nomadically and trying to stay grounded, despite the madness.

Option 2: Asa Monroe

Full name: Asa Gray Monroe

Traits: Loner, couch potato, slob, compute whiz

Vibe: If Asa is heir, he'll try and use tech to progress the mystery, using whatever parts of the internet he can to avoid having to physically dig. Ew. He will be a reluctant explorer.

Option 3: Matisse Monroe

Full name: Matisse Maev Monroe

Traits: Artistic, brave, excitable, technophobe

Vibe: Matisse couldn't be more different from her big brother, she'll pursue the mystery with great energy, if not much finesse. Her hands on approach may put her risk but she figures maybe it'll also inspire her great work.

Option 4: Revel Monroe

Full name: Revel Rose Monroe

Traits: Perceptive, unlucky, disciplined, friendly

Vibe: Matisse's twin, Revel has spent a lot of time cleaning up after her impulsive sister but it's never gotten her ahead. In pursuing the mystery, she believes that order and preparation will see her triumph, if only her luck will hold.

Option 5: Hero Monroe

Full name: Hero Shay Monroe

Traits: Rebel, eccentric, heat lover, nurturing

Vibe: Hero has always gone her own way, and she doesn't really care if it's legal or not. To solve this mystery and protect her family, she'll not only think outside the box, she'll burn the box down.

The Monroe Legacy - Gen. 4 Chapter 14 - The End of Avoidance

She's hoped he wouldn't come - that he'd run away like she had but vanishing had never been Noki's style. He was on time, looking only a little nervous which somehow made Lillia's sweaty palms even clammier. She gestured at the next sun lounger, slightly further away than would make for a comfortable conversation. A calculated move to try and keep things short. Impersonal.

"Hi," he said. It didn't feel impersonal.

"You wanted to see me?" Despite everything Rose had said, everything Lillia knew to be true in her cousin's outburst the night before, she still didn't know how to have this talk. She didn't know what she wanted so she figured it was best to let Noki take the lead while she tried to work things out.

"Um. Yes. It's about Lucky Palms. Well sort of. It's about you and Lucky Palms, you in Lucky Palms... am I making any sense?" He stumbled for words and Lillia couldn't help the affectionate smile that quirked her lip. He's never been unsure in college, until that last time, and it reminded her of - no. She didn't want to think about that.

"So far I've understood you have something to say about me and/or Lucky Palms in various configurations", she kept her tone light, and he looked at her, something of the old dynamic snapping between them.

"Right." Noki gathered himself. "So I've had an offer. Two actually. One of a job, here in Lucky Palms and another from the University to buy Yellow Cottage for more than it's really worth. It's a chance for me to have a real fresh start, one that I could never afford otherwise... but I know that this is your hometown. "Your family is here, Rose is here, and I've made things hard enough for you. So - I wanted to give you the chance to tell me to stay away. And I will. I can look for another job".

He tailed off. Lillia stood and walked towards the water. She knew without looking that he had followed. She paused.

"You know, I really liked that Yellow Cottage" she mused, "I got the impression you did too?"

Noki agreed. "I did. I do. But I can't really afford to keep it. Nobody's hiring anything close to what I'd have to pay to keep it up.

"Your parents still haven't reconsidered?" Lillia was surprised. Was it really so terrible to not go through with an arranged marriage in the 21st Century. On look at Anoki's face told her that apparently it was. He looked sad, angry and resolute all in the fraction of a second.

"No," was his only response.

"Well Lucky Palms is a pretty big town, and I assume you're not planning to work for any of my family's businesses? Lillia asked.

"The job is just out of town, New Business Junior Associate at Rowson Hydroelectrics. It sounds boring as hell. It is  boring as hell but it pays, and they didn't make my dad's list of companies to call and tell not to hire me so..."He sounded matter of fact, resigned to his limited options and Lillia almost envied him the simplicity of his choice. She still had no idea what to pursue.

"You should take the job" she said. "What happened between us was a mess and a mistake but we don't have to keep paying for it forever." Lillia couldn't quite believe how simple it sounded in clear air.

"Really?" Noki sounded doubtful, but pleased.

"What?" Lillia joked, "Surely I wasn't that big of a controlling bitch at college that you expected me to ban you from an entire town for my convenience?"

"Weeeellllll-oof", he started, before Lillia punched him in the arm.

"And there I was about to take you up on your long ago offer of friendship Anoki Moon. Such a shame your sense of humor is still that of a grade schooler". He grinned at her and she suddenly remembered why he'd been so dangerous, what his smile - the real one rather than the knowing smirk - could do to her.

"You really wanna be friends with me?" Noki sounded so hopeful that Lillia didn't have the heart to say no, even as all her cautious braincells screamed to run, maintain distance, guard against the man who was somehow standing much closer than she'd thought he was.

"Sure." She shrugged, stepping back. "I think we can probably manage friends. Rose asked me to tell her what you wanted so I will make sure she's cool with it before we plan any bar crawls or... friendship bracelet ceremonies."

Lillia's sentence trailed into silence. Had she given away the flip her stomach still did for Noki in the pause when she desperately racked her brain for platonic activities they might do together. Had he caught the faint blush that chased the definitely not platonic activities that had briefly flirted on the edge of her mind. Had he-

He stepped forward and took her hands.

"Thank you Lillia. You've made all this sound easy but I know it might not have been. I appreciate the second chance. I owe you a beer."

"Third chance." She lightly stepped out of his reach, keeping her tone light and even. "So I think you owe me three beers!" She walked away before he could see that her hands were shaking.

The Monroe Legacy - Gen. 4 Chapter 13 - Who Are You Punishing?

"Of course you're here." Lillia didn't care that her voice carried a little too far across the empty terrace. "It's 5AM Noki, do not try me".

He crooked an eyebrow but otherwise didn't react to her harsh welcome.

"Hello Lillia. It's nice to see you too. I know it's early but your mum told me that you finish at 6 and I would really like for us to talk when you're done? I wanted to give you some time to think about it. I figured if I came at 6 you'd just run." Noki sounded the same as always, though the smug confidence that had carried him through college was gone.

He fidgeted on his chair.

Lillia frowned.

"You want me to think about whether or not I want to talk to you while I wait on you?"

Noki shrugged. "I can go wait somewhere? In the park round the corner? Come back at 6? Or I can stay, I promise I'll leave a good tip".

"I don't want anything from you!" It escaped before Lillia could realise what she was saying. Noki's eyes went big as she clapped a hand over her mouth. "What I mean is that I don't want to feel like I owe you a chat. I'll talk to you if I want to, not because you threw money at the problem. We're not in college any more and I'm trying to be different".

He nodded slowly. "You know I was jo- you know what never mind. I'll go wait in that park. Come by if you want to see me Lillia. I would - well - just do what you want okay?"

Lillia didn't watch to see if he looked back on his way out, wiping down the table with excessive vigour and dumping the cleaning kit back behind the bar. Sparky looked at her with the sort of kind curiosity she'd spent months trying not to attract.

"You wanna tell me why you're scaring off paying customers Miss Lil?" he asked.

She shook her head. "He's... just a guy things ended weirdly with Sparky and - ," Lillia's sentence hung unfinished as she stared at a spot on the counter, twisting a pen in her hands.

Sparky smiled, nodded, this made more sense than the nothing he'd had to go on before.

"Why don't you finish up a bit early? Go do what you need to. Mitch and I can handle things," he said, and then held his tongue and his neutral expression until Lillia had crumpled up her apron and dashed for the door.

She stood for a second, looking in the direction of the park, with a curious expression, then
got in her car and drove home as the sun rose over the desert.

The Monroe Legacy - G.4 Chapter 7 - Guilty Secrets

As Rose sobbed in her arms the sickening guilt that had been boiling in Lillias belly began to climb her throat, the few mouthfuls of breakfast she had managed threatening to make a comeback. After a broken nights sleep she had timidly gone to Roses room, half-expecting to be greeted by a storm of accusations and abuse and the other half of her hoping that her cousin would be elsewhere.

Instead she was pulled in by a heartbroken Rose. She had just got off the phone with Anoki expecting their fight to have dissolved in the cold light of day but he had told her it was over, that she should move on, that he didnt and couldnt love her. It was brutal, final and it meant that Lillia would have to tell Rose the truth herself or deceive her cousin forever.

Her long-practiced numbness and refusal to accept blame or judgement warred in her head with the terrifying new plan of honesty and kindness, it was a moment where she could continue to be what she had been or truly begin to change.

Lillia drew a deep breath and prepared herself to finally start doing the right thing.

Rose. She began, determination holding up her flagging courage. Theres something I need to tell you.

Her cousin turned her tearstained face to Lillia and nodded,

Okay, but can you tell me on the drive home? I cant be in this place any more, it all reminds me of him.Lillia nodded, the coward in her relieved and the rest of her reasoning that she should get Rose back to the comforting arms of her family before causing her more pain. But she would tell her. Just not now.

Rose rallied on the drive home, each mile they put between Arizona and themselves she sat a little straighter and was soon planning a summer full of distractions and trips. Lillia let her talk, her secret bitter on the tip of her tongue and her mind working to figure out whether it was best to crush Rose while she was already down or go along with her planning and tell her when she was less fragile.

Her internal battle carried Lillia all the way back to Lucky Palms and suddenly she was among people who didn't see the self-centred mean girl, here she was the sensible daughter, the heiress and the good cousin. Her family's pride in her success at college, their sympathy for Rose's heartbreak and their pleasure at being together again made up Lillia's mind.

As sickening as what she had done was... It was only a kiss. Telling Rose would ruin her summer just as Noki had ruined her year. The family would be shaken, fractured perhaps and Lillia was determined not only to make everyone proud it also to become the young woman they believed her to be.

The little voice in her head told her that turning over a new leaf wouldn't make it right, that she should come clean and then make good, but it was summer, they were hundreds of miles from the scene of the crime and Lillia would make sure that she was the best friend Rose could ask for. Then she would be sure to forgive her when the right moment finally arrived for the truth to be known.

The summer passed in a flurry of beautiful days and balmy nights. Rose and Lillia were as inseparable as they had been as children, lying in the sun for hours and giggling about their past exploits, moaning about Daisy's two-faced ways ad tossing a frisbee around.

The days were as golden as their tans and Rose soon put Noki to the side and fell into a summer fling, laughing that Lillia should double date with her. And she had tried.

She had put on her prettiest dress and a flirty smile and gone to dinner, let them hold her too close on the dance floor and taken a deep breath before running when they went to kiss her. But with each one the same thing was missing as always had been. Now that Lillia knew the breathlessness of losing herself in a moment, had felt the heat of a stolen glance and the enticing uncertainty of a conversation laced with hidden meaning, returning to those old days of meaningless flings was impossible. Even as she fought to forget him and worked to undo the damage her own foolishness had caused, Noki was constantly in her thoughts.

She and Rose never discussed him, it was like he had never existed and she began to wonder if her plan to one day tell Rose would be necessary. But when Lillia was alone in her bed she couldn't keep her mind off what had happened, he was constantly in her dreams and she knew that even if Rose was truly over her heartbreak the truth still needed to be told. Until the past was truly behind her Lillia would never completely be the new person she wanted to be

And she was truly beginning to change.

She spent time helping at the brasserie, a task she'd always avoided with care, spending time with her parents and trying to make their lives easier. She spent time with Eva, looked after Flynn and took him to the skate park that he was obsessed with when his parents were to busy to. She studied, let Casper teach her chess, got to know Tia properly. All the little things Lillia had always sneered at and avoided when she was letting the Flowers steer her she tried out and found that most she actually enjoyed.

For the first time since her accident Lillia began to feel like a whole person. It seemed that her anger and fear had pushed her to fill the gap in her life with more of the things that were right in front of her instead of looking for new opportunities and things to hold on to. Buoyed by this one evening she went outside to the pool, the scene of the crime, hoping that maybe she would be able to put that demon behind her as well.

The water sparkled in the moonlight, the gentle lap of the waves against the tiles sounded so familiar and Lillia approached with her breath held. Just when she thought she was going to do it the panic seized her.

She felt as if she was about to pitch forward into the water and be dragged down. Tears streamed down her face and her breathing became ragged as she collapsed panting on the poolside.

That was how Rose found her, hunched over and heartbroken, for all of the mistakes she had made but even more resolute in her decision to change. The two sat in silence for a while before Rose asked if Lillia wanted to talk.

The summer was ending and Lillia knew that she was running out of time to come clean, she had worked so hard to be a better friend to Rose and the thought  of spoiling it was galling. But she had promised....

'I don't want you to hate me Rosie,' she began, hesitating over how best to dull the pain of her confession for her friend.

Rose just looked confused before responding with a joke,

'I don't hate you Lillia! Well not unless you copy my dress or steal my boyfriend anyway!'

Lillia smiled weakly as the sick feeling in her stomach intensified in to a solid brick of fear. She tried to force the words around it, to make her mouth form the harsh truth but in the wake of her cousins throwaway comment she just couldn't bring herself to destroy them both.

'Lillia?' Rose cut into her thoughts, her tone concerned. 'What's wrong?'

Lillia shook her head to clear the panic and pasted on a bright smile, for once glad that she was so good at glossing over an awkward situation with a false happiness.
'Oh nothing,' she responded, furious at her cowardice even as she admitted to herself what she should have known from the beginning, she couldn't, no wouldn't, tell Rose about Noki. It was in the past and she was building a new future, what was one more regret when she already lived with so many from her years of misbehaving. That chapter was officially over.

'You know I would never do anything to deliberately hurt you right?' was her only concession to the truth.

Rose rolled her eyes.

'I know that! Well except that one time you made me get a Brazilian! Now let's go out dancing, one last night before the packing begins.'

Lillia let her cousin drag her away, giving in once more to the current of what was expected of her but swearing to herself that from now on she would be living with her eyes open. There would be no more casualties with Lillia Monroe's name on them.

The Monroe Legacy - G.4. Chapter 2 - Sink or Swim

Daisy had the look of a creature who realised it was out of options as a predator backed it into a corner, Lillia knew she had won.

The girls were sitting on the deck in front of Daisy's house the weekend after homecoming and the atmosphere had been tense. On Lillia's arrival Daisy had launched into an accusing rant, threatening her place in the group and only stopped when she realised the normally apologetic Lillia was simply staring her down. Behind the steely facade, Lillia waited with baited breath, playing the mean girl wasn't natural for her but she knew this might be her only chance to change the dynamic in her favour. Who knew, maybe she'd even be able to improve things at school!

When Daisy looked to Rose for back-up, Rose sensing a change had only shrugged, said she was disappointed but that at least one if them had won. Lillia had already been to her cousins house and apologised for what had happened, laying the groundwork to defend against Daisy's manipulations.

Once Daisy had burned out her anger Lillia began to speak.

'I didn't campaign for that crown, you'd have known, there would have been gossip and I was constantly with one of you campaigning for Rose. I don't really care if you believe me.

But know this. If you try to undermine me, spread rumours, snub me or "replace me" as you're so fond of threatening, you will regret it. Our school-mates love me and I will not hesitate to start over, Rose is my cousin and our families are close and just as you say I'm replaceable, so are you. I've had a multitude of texts since the dance from pretty, popular girls who would love to be in my circle.

None of that has to happen. But screw with me and you will see just how lonely high school can be.'

The threat hung in the air like a heavy perfume, rewriting the dynamic of the group and as Lillia turned to leave Daisy stopped her.

'So what are we wearing tomorrow?'

Lillia smiled, until that moment she'd never known the giddy rush of power.

'This week I'm thinking florals.'

------------------------------------------

Those outside of the inner circle at Brittlebush might have been forgiven for thinking nothing had changed. Most of the same people sat in the cool tables and come Spring Fling, the king and queen were the same as at Homecoming.

But for Lillia it was a whole new world, one where she pulled the strings and it was intoxicating. She'd heard enough of Casper's theories about power whilst playing chess or Risk with him that she knew she needed to start out strong, so she began by ensuring that Daisy knew she wasn't messing around. She brought two new girls into their circle, they were sophomores, irritating but eager to please and held huge sway over the lower school, exactly what Lillia needed. Every time Daisy tried to take control or alter a plan, Brooke and Nina would take Lillia's side, it wasn't a solution she enjoyed but it worked.

Her next move was less of a power play and more for her. She asked out Jeremy, explaining away the homecoming scenario and trying out some of the unused flirting tips that Rose constantly talked about. By Spring Fling they were going steady, Jeremy still amazed that the undisputed queen of their school wanted him. Even Rose had admitted he was kinda cute, especially after Lillia took him shopping for Christmas, revealing with tight t-shirts a physique that the maths shirts had hidden.

Daisy was the only one who would roll her eyes when he turned up at things, but rarely and only when she was sure Lillia couldn't see. It truly was as if the upper echelons of the Brittlebush Academy student body had turned upside down.

Less successful had been Lillia's attempts to break-down the social divides. When she'd invited some of the swim-team girls to eat at their table it had been crazy awkward, her cheerleader/scholastic decathlon mixer hadn't even got off the ground. Lillia had begged Casper for advice, her brother knew a lot about strategy for someone who hated to socialise and he'd given her a very strange look.

'Lil, not everyone wants to be like you, perhaps the smart people are happy hanging out with smart people and would prefer not to hang out with you?' Casper's bluntness was often borderline offensive and Lillia had to remind herself that his Aspergers prevented him from realising this. Still, she wished that her various activities could overlap more. She found that between parties, training, Jeremy and tutoring she was constantly exhausted.

With college a little over a year away Lillia knew that she couldn't afford to take a break. She'd been scouted by the top swim schools in the country, Texas, Arizona and Stanford were all interested. Rose and Daisy were planning on Arizona, Rose in a cheer scholarship and Daisy on her parents money. They fully expected Lillia to join them, to take the Flowers to a new state and find a new kingdom to rule. The thought filled Lillia with dread, but Arizona was a good school and had the lowest academic requirement of the three.

Given how hard Lillia was finding it just to stay on top of her schoolwork, it might be the most she could to make Texas. If she could on,y find those extra hours, find  way to make the trigonometry make sense and the French sentences stay in the right order. Her nights got later and her morning earlier as she tried to find the time, Lillia wanted desperately to be able to choose but all she seemed to do was get more and more exhausted. The only time her head was clear was in the pool when everything but the rhythm of her stroke and the pressure in her ears fell away.

Her parents made it clear they would support her, whatever her choice but they were busy planning the launch of their new bistro, a family friendly place where good food was reasonably priced and they were as tired as she was. It wasn't unusual for the three of them to all fall asleep in front of whatever nature documentary Casper was currently obsessed with and be woken up hours later in the middle of the night by one if the increasingly frequent explosions that came from Casper's room.

It was a funny sort of set-up they had, Lillia mused, always had been really, her parents loved them and worked hard for them but they also gave them a lot of freedom to try things out and make mistakes. Maybe too much freedom Lillia thought, with Eva's happy little family just down the road she could see for the first time how things might have been different. Like if she had been told no more often, but still, she had never wanted for anything, she had everything she wanted and compared to most of her friends she had so many opportunities to do crazy things.

Which was why she ended up in situations like these. Rose had been pushing for a party. And not just a slumber party but a wild college style party. When Gray and Rachel announced they were flying to New York for a weekend to interview a maitre d that Rachel knew from the past, Rose spied her opportunity. The senior Monroes were told about the gathering and approved it, though they weren't told about the keg, the college kids or the extra 50 people Daisy and Rose had invited. Lillia hadn't even been told about them.

At first she'd tried to laugh it off, ignoring the stony stare of her brother as he barricaded himself in his room. She poured herself a warm beer. And then another and tried to distract herself by making out with Jeremy.

But now dawn was breaking. There were people unconscious all over the floor, half the kitchen china was broken and her parents were due back in a few hours.

Lillia's head pounded with the stress of it all, she didn't think even her parents could laugh this one off and prom was only a week away. Lillia cursed. The whole point of taking over the Flowers had been to avoid getting pushed into situations but she hadn't even been able to do that, let alone use her position to bring the school together. She had been so naive.

Lillia arrived poolside barely even aware of what she was doing. If was instinctive, her stress relief and as she hit the water she felt the cool pressure begin to erase all the worries.

Two lengths in she realised that perhaps she shouldn't be swimming. She was exhausted and she'd had a few drinks. Even as the thought crossed her mind she felt the crunch of cramp in her lower leg.

A flash. She panicked. It passed.

Shaking with relief Lillia started for the side and the cramp hit again.

Her leg spammed as it locked, throwing her down in the water, then her stomach cramped. She gasped involuntarily, the water shocking her tongue and the chlorine burning her throat. Lillia struggled, thrashed hard but her body wouldn't obey her.
