The Monroe Legacy - G.3. Chapter 14 - Home Truths

'I remember you. You smiled and sang, but Mama said you never wanted me.'

Eva stuck her chin out, defying him to believe she cared but pain shot through her eyes.

'Mama didn't much like me either but at least she didn't leave me.' With this she turned and rushed into the bar, her shoulders beginning to shake.

Milo followed her leaving Gray, horrified and shocked, outside with the owner who now put his gun away and introduced himself as Ty, Milo's uncle.

'I'm guessing by the look on your face that you didn't leave her?' Ty asked. Gray shook his head numbly.

'Aisha... Her mother. She used Eva to try and fix our relationship. I loved Eva, still love Eva, but when I told Aisha it was over she just vanished and took Eva with her. I've been searching for her for a decade.'

Ty looked at the man in front of him with sympathy, his expression was so desperate, his tone so broken that Ty knew he wasn't lying.

'Listen man, you have to tell Maia, I mean Eva, all of that. But she's gonna want proof and it won't be easy to make her believe you. She's not even fourteen but she's been hurt too often, she puts on a good front with the piercings and the attitude, but she's a mess. You want your daughter back, I get that, but it's going to take time and it's probably going to break you heart all over again.'

Gray nodded, he'd never really imagined what might happen if he found Eva, imagining her personality to be the same as she'd been as a child. He would do whatever it took.

'Ty, can you tell me what you know about her, so I have some idea what I'm dealing with before I go to her and try to persuade her to come home with me?'

The older man nodded grimly.

-------------------------------------------

'I met Eva when she moved to the neighbourhood a year ago. Milo found her sleeping in the bus station and brought her here for the night. It took a couple of months to get her to trust us. She's never told us much but here's what I figured out.

Antonia brought Eva and her little sister Cara, short for Carmen I think, to town a year ago to hide. Seems she had been married to a guy who made his money importing and exporting certain high risk products. Antonia was a cold woman, One time she came in here drinking and told me she'd only brought Eva here because her husband, Jorge I think he was called, said what she was smuggling in would be best hidden on a kid, specially an adorable white kid.'

Gray seethed, he'd believed many things of Aisha over the years and she was living up to most of them.

'Even then I think Eva knew her ma didn't much care for her, especially when she saw how she was with Carmen. Cara was a sweet child, a little slow, but Eva and Antonia both worshipped her. Her pa liked her just fine, as long as she stayed quiet when he had his associates over. They wanted for nothing, even Eva was taken care of, and Antonia would have done anything for that man. What she did do and know was the reason she was out here hiding.

Just before they moved, someone killed Jorge, don't know how, don't know why. The girls were away at the spa. Antonia knew that with what she knew and without his protection she was a dead woman. So she ran.

Soon after she got here she threw Eva out, I never found out why but I got the impression from overhearing her and Milo that Antonia believed Eva had leaked the info that lead to Jorge being killed. Eva's a smart girl and I don't believe that's true, but one way or the other she ended up living on the streets, creeping back in and sleeping when her ma was at work and caring for Cara.

After Milo brought her here she asked for a job. I gave it to her and offered her a place to stay. Two weeks ago she went back to see her sister and found the place shot up and her family dead. I can't imagine what that was like. We've been hiding her in case those guys are looking for her too.

Your daughter is a good girl, but she's scared and she's angry and she doesn't trust anyone. Not even Milo really. We only found out her real name because she was screaming in her sleep.'

Gray's head was in his hands. He'd wondered what kind of life Eva had had, imagining all sorts of horrors which now seemed less ridiculous than he'd convinced himself they were. Her childhood sounded alright but it was a far cry from the affection he would have showered her with. And the past year... he couldn't begin to make sense if it, his mind going back over and again the look of betrayal in his daughter's eyes when she'd accused him of leaving her.

Gray wasn't sure if he could ever make it all right for her, but he would try.

After talking with Ty, it was decided that Gray would get his proof together, ready to show that he hadn't ever given up and Ty would try and prepare Eva for the truth of her abduction. Gray called a cab back to the police station to collect his evidence and to see what paperwork would be involved in trying to get Eva back home.

After a brief conversation with the police it became clear that the issue of Eva's identity would be difficult to prove, especially if it was tied up with the Jorge Garcia murder investigation. The man had been a kingpin of a major drug trafficking organisation who were caught up in a deadly turf war with a rival. However she was an at-risk minor (it was believed that the killers of Aisha and Cara were still in the area) they might be able to issue a temporary Visa which would get Eva home and the formalities could be dealt with then.

The catch? Eva would have to go willingly.

Whilst the wheels were set in motion Gray called Rachel who seemed genuinely thrilled that Eva had been found. Despite the demanding cries of their 12 hour old son, Rachel insisted Gray should stay in Mexico and try and orchestrate Eva's return, Casper would probably be in NCU for at least a week and she could manage.

Gray felt as if his heart was being pulled in two. Across the border a beautiful woman with a kind heart was caring for a demanding toddler and a newborn baby and here in Mexico, his long- lost daughter was hurting and alone.

It took three days to get the temporary Visa and five days to persuade Eva to come back to Lucky Palms. She had been less harsh with Gray once he had shown her the newspaper appeals he had made with Hallie's help, the stacks of research and the police reports. But she couldn't dispel the idea that she would once again become the odd one out in a family or forget the last ten years.

Eva's response to Gray's remarriage had been minimal, a single tear that she refused to acknowledge or wipe away running down her face as he told her about Rachel, Lillia and Casper, unable to keep the adoration from his voice. Gray begged and pleaded, promising to protect her, to treat her equally and to help her adjust, but Eva was stubborn in her refusal, she knew how to survive here, she had friends.

In the end it was Milo and Ty who convinced her; Milo with his impassioned pleas to get away from the area before whoever was out for her family found her and Ty by threatening to kick her out and fire her. In the end Eva agreed because she was out of options.

It was far from the loving reunion that Gray had always imagined but he didn't care as long as she was coming back.

As they pulled away from Ty and Milo in a cab headed to the airport, Gray tried to squeeze Eva's hand and then tried not to be hurt as she pulled away, staring out of the window. He knew that nothing but time and actions would truly convince his lonely daughter that she was wanted and safe.

After a quiet flight and a tense drive they arrived at their house, Gray fighting the urge to rush inside, kiss his wife and meet his new son, giving Eva time to adjust and prepare.

As she finally began to walk through the gate, tugging nervously on the hem of the only new dress she had let him buy her, Gray allowed himself a small smile.

Eva was home.

The Monroe Legacy - G.2. Chapter 6 - Tears and Fears

Hallie found Gray frozen in place a few minutes later. His face was white, his eyes distant and the letter, if it could be called that, was still in his hand. It took three attempts to get Gray to tell his mother what he had found. That Aisha was gone and Eva too.

Hallie blanched and called the police, pacing the room until a detective arrived. As he questioned Gray, Hallie and Saffron started calling around their family and friends, searching for any sign of Aisha and Eva.

'Mr Monroe, we understand your daughter is missing' the man asked kindly.

Gray nodded numbly.

'When did you last see her and what was she wearing.'

Gray just stared.

The detective's tone grew more urgent,

'Mr Monroe, I know this is difficult but we need to move quickly, we need to know anything that might help us find your little girl.'

'She was wearing her pajamas, blue ones, when I tucked her in last night. I haven't seen her since. She was gone this morning.' Gray's voice was cracked and brittle.

The detective nodded. 'Is there anyone who would wish your daughter harm. Have you seen anything or anyone suspicious around the neighbourhood.'

'Her mother took her. She left a note'. Grey put the crumpled paper on the table, the first time he'd let go of it since he'd found it.

The detective unwrapped it and looked at Gray, confused. 'Her mother? Is she in violation of your custody agreement? Do you have reason to believe she might wish to harm your child?'

'No. We don't have a custody agreement. Aisha is a crap mother but I've never known her deliberately harm Eva. Leave her to cry, yes. Forget to feed her, yes. But I don't think she'd hurt her.'

'Mr Monroe. If I understand correctly, your daughter's mother, who has every right to be with her daughter, has taken her out. And you've called the police why?'

Gray looked stricken. 'Were you not listening! Aisha, she doesn't like Eva, she ignores her completely. And she's taken her, left a note. Detective, I don't know if she'll bring her back.'

The detective gathered his notes and stood to leave.

'I understand your worry but there's nothing I can do. Eva's mother has as much right to custody as you do, she's been gone less than a day and we have no reason to believe Eva to be in immediate danger. If they don't return or make contact within 48 hours, you can report them missing and then we can start to look for them. In the meantime, get yourself a good lawyer, if she's taken her before opening a custody battle you'll need all the help you can get.'

Gray couldn't sit still for the next 48 hours. Hallie called his work and explained and they put him on compassionate leave. He spent the waiting period driving around the neighbourhood and then further out with a picture of Eva, asking everyone if they'd seen her. Saffron and Leyton helped, they even drove across two states to a distant aunt's house, Aisha's only family, but they hadn't seen them.

When the 48 hours were up, Gray reported both Aisha and Eva missing. The police finally began to search, too slowly for Gray's taste and he paced the house, tossed and turned, barely eating or sleeping.

Hallie tried to get him to talk, but all he could say was that he didn't understand why Aisha had done it, he wasn't surprised she had left, in a way it was what he had been hoping for, so that he wasn't forced to kick her out. He would even have agreed to some sort of shared custody, whatever was best for Eva, if Aisha had been willing.

But why had she taken his baby? She had never been interested, never seemed to care, especially recently. He could only assume that Aisha had wanted to hurt or punish him for some reason and that this was the best way she knew to do it.

And God did it hurt.

A week after Eva was taken, the police turned up at the door, serious looks on their faces.

Gray let them in wordlessly and the lead investigator dove straight in.

'We have a sighting,' Gray's face lit up so the officer hurried on, 'but it's not what we were hoping for.'

'Where were they?' Gray demanded, 'Tell me please!'.

The detective gestured to his colleague who pulled a grainy picture out of a cardboard folder and passed it over. Gray snatched it up. Between the picture quality and the floppy Sunday Aisha was wearing it was hard to identify her but he'd recognise his daughter anywhere. She didn't look happy.

'Mr Monroe, that photograph was taken at the Mexican border. The passports used by the people in that photograph identified them as a Mrs Antonia Garcia and her adoptive daughter, Maia.

Gray looked puzzled. 'But that's Eva. My daughter Eva'.

'And we believe you sir. However, their paperwork was all accepted as valid, they crossed the border and with that... Well things get rather more complicated. We traced Antonia Garcia's  identity  through her marriage certificate. Her maiden name - Antonia Lopez - belonged to a cadaver, now listed as a Jane Doe in a New Mexico morgue, the identity of her "adoptive daughter" belonged to a child at the same hospital which died in infancy. The transferral of these identities was done incredibly professionally. The marriage licence is fully legal, the adoption papers are expertly faked or again doctored. Mr Garcia, a Jorge Garcia, married Antonio, Aisha, whatever you wished to call her, four months ago  here in a Lucky Palms chapel a few streets over.

We don't have an address for Garcia, the one he provided was fake, but we do suspect he is involved in organised crime and possibly in trafficking both substances and people across the border. We have, so far, been unable to trace your family any further than the border.'

Gray sat, disbelieving, his head in his hands. Hallie laid a hand on his back, not knowing what to say. She looked at the detective, looked him in the eyes and asked what they had all been wondering.

'How can we get her back'.

The pained look that passed between the officers in the room did not escape her as the detective gave her a grim smile.

'We will search for her. The Mexican authorities have been informed and are on the lookout. If we find them you have an incredibly strong case for parental abduction IF we can prove their real identities. DNA samples will help with that. If we find them, we can look to extradite Aisha with Eva as a dependent, but I don't want to mislead you, this could be a very long process, especially if they are in the care of a criminal organisation who are capable of hiding them.'

Gray finally raised his head, his jaw set.

'I'm going to look for them, I will find my daughter and I will bring her home.' His tone was absolute, his certainty convincing, but the police had seen it before.

Sighing the detective replied, 'I understand your sentiment but honestly you will be most useful here, building a case under The Hague convention for parental abduction and raising awareness, TV appeals can provide new leads.'

Gray was unshaken, 'I don't care, I have to do something. I keep imagining Eva waiting for her story... Aisha never read to her. She loved .... She loved how Much Do I Love you, the one with the bunnies, you know where they-'

His voice broke and Gray started sobbing, unable to continue. Hallie sat helpless, how could she possibly make this right, she wished more than ever that Cai was here, Leyton and Saffron had helped keep the house running but nobody could make a situation make sense like Cai had. So she did the only thing she could think of, knowing how she would feel if one of her children were taken from her, she would fight,

'Gray honey, go if you need to go, find your baby. I will build the case, do the lawyer thing. Your siblings will help. You go, be safe, be courageous and bring her home.'

Unable to answer, Gray buried his face in his mother's lap, a child once again and she stroked his hair as the police filed out of the house.

The next morning Gray left, armed with desperation, hope, photographs and every penny he could scrape together.

Six months later he returned with nothing.

The Monroe Legacy - Generation 2 Heir Voting!

Hi there lovely readers - thank you so much for all your commenting and reading - it really has kept me pushing on when the story got stuck or the characters weren't cooperating! I'm equal parts excited and sad that Marlie's Chapter is almost at an end, I almost feel like she's my long-lost sister, but I can't wait to see what life throws at the new heir.

Each of them has a story in my head that's crying out to be told and choosing myself would be like picking my favourite child - so I'm asking for your help!

If you're a long term reader and you already have a favourite then scroll all the way down and vote away!

If you're not up to date/haven't started but think you might like to read in future (or maybe you just love to vote - hey, who am I to judge!) then below you'll find a short, as spoiler-free as possible bio for each candidate along with a photograph and their traits etc!

In age order (I've listed middle names but they're known only by the first!)

Lola Marie Monroe
Age: 21

Traits: Good, Loner, Can't Stand Art, Hopeless Romantic, Good Sense of Humour.

Skills/Hobbies: Logic, Fishing, Gardening

Lifetime Wish: World Renowned Surgeon

Bio: Lola and her twin Belle are Marlie's children with a one-time crush Benjamin Schmidt. Lola is a quiet girl and struggles to connect with other people although her newly developed sense of humour may help with that. Lola excels at school and since having her heart-broken by first love Carson is trying to find a way to get over him. Lola wants to work in Pediatric medicine, finding the logic of it all soothing but the hopeless romantic in her worries that wit her social skills she'll never find another guy like Carson. She hopes to attend University to get ahead in the medical profession and maybe meet Prince Charming!

Belle Carolina Monroe

Age: 21

Traits: Insane, Friendly, Virtuoso, Daredevil, Dramatic

Skills/Hobbies: Piano, Guitar, Hanging with her friends and playing in a band, working out.

Lifetime Wish: Rock Star

Bio: Where her twin Lola is quiet and studious, Belle is a wild child! Her personality is really too big for just one person which is perhaps why she spends so much time conversing with herself. She blazed through high school as the queen of pranks, with a string of disposable boyfriends in tow. Belle thought she could have any guy she wanted until she met Harrison, the lead singer of her band who seems to not to notice Belle's blatant flirtation. With a personality as flamboyant as she is musically talented, Belle is sure that she'll make it to the top of the music industry.

Hallie Mae Monroe

Age: 15

Traits: Brave, Artistic, Easily Impressed, Great Kisser

Skills/Hobbies: Painting, Street Art, Hanging out with Belle, more painting!

Lifetime Wish: tbc.

Bio: Hallie is the eldest daughter of Marlie and husband Brody. She loves nothing more than getting lost in her own head and painting whatever she finds there. At the tender age of 15 she already has a flourishing relationship with the town consignment store and has had her first piece commissioned. Hallie is popular at school despite being quite aloof, rumour has it she's a great kisser but Hallie has never been kissed! If she could stop worrying about that Art scholarship and go out with her siblings she might find her muse and prove that theory, one way or the other! Her hair colour is still a family mystery - genetics are fun!

Oscar Brody Monroe

Age: 14

Traits: Athletic, Disciplined, Computer Whiz, Photographer's Eye

Skills/Hobbies: Working out, chasing boys away from Georgia, looking moody, video games, photography.

Lifetime Wish: tbc.

Bio: Oscar is the only boy in the Monroe clan and having four sisters is no laughing matter! Between working out, playing quarterback and keeping an eye on his twin's string of admirers Oscar barely has time to remember his schoolwork. This jock has an artistic side though, he loves to take pictures and is secretly crushing on one of Hallie's geeky art friends, though if anyone asks he's totally dating the deputy-head cheerleader. If Oscar could only apply his discipline to his studies then he'd be a shoo-in for collegiate football.

Georgia Grace Monroe

Age: 14

Traits: Clumsy, Virtuoso, Disciplined, Neurotic

Skills/Hobbies: Singing, piano, shopping, flirting, cheer-leading, annoying Oscar, cleaning things.

Lifetime Wish: tbc.

Bio: Georgia is the youngest of the Monroe children and she's still figuring it all out, but while she's thinking - she might as well be popular! Georgia's violet eyes, easy charm and endearing smile have made her a hit at high-school. Sure, she occasionally falls over in the corridor but that's the price to pay for wearing such fabulous shoes, besides which there's always an entourage of boys to pick her up! What will it take for Georgia to start taking life seriously and build up some skills. After all, high school wont last forever and with her slightly neurotic tendencies she's be wise to plan in advance.

So there we have the five Monroe kids - they're all very different with strengths and weaknesses to match. Still can'y decide? Chapter 20 has extra info on all the kids - though the best way to know them is to read the story from the start! Feel free to ask me questions in the comment, I'll respond as soon as I can!

This vote has now closed - to find out who won keep reading with Chapter 21 - Daring to Dream

The Monroe Legacy - G.1. Chapter 18 - Sins of the Father

DISCLAIMER - This chapter is rated mature - it contains references to violence and language which some readers may find upsetting. Please hit the back button if you do not wish to read on.

--------------------------

Looking back at that morning Marlie could never understand how such an idllic day could turn into such a nightmare. It began as most week-end days did - Georgia and Oscar would babble together in the nursery until one of them needed changing. She and Brody would wander up and take care of them together - often wondering how they'd produced such gorgeous babies.

Then they'd make coffee and sit sipping it together outside whilst listening to their family wake up in the house. These were golden mornings when they had the time to appreciate how far they'd come.

That day as Marlie and Brody turned to go back to the house and start breakfast the paper-boy stopped them.

'Scuse me, but are you Marlie?' he asked.

'That's me' Marlie replied, looking slightly baffled. 'Can I help you?'

'No Ma'am, I just got a special message for you' he answered, handing her a small padded envelope. 'Y'all have a good day' he tipped his cap and left.

Marlie looked at the envelope in her hands. Something about it just felt... wrong. In tiny writing by the seal it said, 'For your eyes only'.

Brody after giving the package a cursory glance had scooped up Georgia from where she was playing on the grass and gone in to give her breakfast. Marlie walked unsteadily to the bench and with shaking hand emptied the envelope in to her lap. She shuddered.

It contained a letter made of clipped magazine parts and, more disturbingly, a lock of blonde hair.

Marlie sat frozen. Why was this happening to them? Their family had suffered a lot. Who had exposed them and what did this person want? Some time later Brody found her sitting unmoved and shaking.

'Marlie' he began before seeing her face. 'Baby, what's wrong?'

She held out the note to him and he read it before sitting beside her and pulling her into his protective embrace.

'What do we do Brody?' Marie sobbed. 'I'm scared. We can't call the police because officially Norma-Jeane doesn't exist'.

Brody sighed, 'Let's call Ralph' was his only reply, 'Perhaps this is all a big hoax and she's safe at home. If not, well he has some experience dealing with threats. He'll know what to do.

----------------------------
Earlier that morning.

Norma-Jeane woke up to darkness and a crushing headache. Where was she? What was this place? What had happened?

She wasn't in her bed, it seemed like she was lying on some kind of metal table. Lifting her head to look around she saw walls covered in ropes and tools. Nothing good ever happened in rooms like these.

Hugging herself, as much for comfort as to fend of the chill, she inched her aching body off the table. She stumbled around the tiny room, supporting herself on the wall as the pain in her head threatened to throw her back into unconsciousness. She guessed it was a basement, the stairs were the only way out but the trapdoor at the top was locked.

She curled in the corner and racked her memory for any idea of how she had gotten into this mess.

The last thing she remembered was running to open the gate for her car, cursing the early frost which had caught her without a coat. And then it came to her.

The pressure around her neck, the cold press of steel against her body. Whoever had taken her had come up behind her. She remembered clawing at the arm crushing her windpipe as the edges of her vision went fuzzy. And then nothing. Nothing until this room.

She'd never even heard her attacker coming, let alone caught a glimpse of who might have found her.

They'd been so sure they'd neutralised her enemies. Ralph's connections had caught the man who had been pursuing her and now he was at the bottom of an unnamed lake in Alaska.

But somebody had found her and God only knew what they wanted...

Her thoughts were disrupted by the rattle of the trapdoor being unlocked and opened. Norma-Jeane scrambled away but there was nowhere to go. As she cowered in the corner and a dark clothed stranger came down the stairs she couldn't help reflecting that all the Hollywood kidnappings in the world couldn't have prepared her for the terror she was feeling.

'Well you sure are a purty little thing' smirked her captor. 'I can't see why anyone would want you dead when there are so many more... enjoyable things a man could do with a honey like you'.

'Please!' cried Norma-Jeane, 'Please just let me go. What do you want me for, I'm nobody. If it's money you want, you can have everything. Just please let me go.'

Her captor just smirked. 'Aw honey, we both know you ain't a nobody. I got strict instructions to put a bullet in you, but fortunately, now we're properly acquainted I've got some other ideas for us to do business together.'

He pulled a knife from the nearby block and walked towards her.

'Now don't be scared little lady, I ain't gonna hurt you. Well not yet. I'll just be needing a little bit of your hair as a present for an old friend. Hold still.'

As her hair was roughly hacked at Norma-Jeane just sat hopelessly. She'd never seen this man before, she was sure of it, but he seemed somehow familiar.

As her attacker started to leave he turned and winked at her, 'You just sit tight now Marilyn.'

-----------------------
6pm at the Monroe Residence

It had been a long day in the Monroe house. Ralph had raced over when they rang, he'd worked through the night and returned home to an empty house, assuming Norma-Jeane was with her sister.

Marlie explained the little she knew and after cross examining her for every last seemingly irrelevant detail he'd jumped into his car and rushed away to meet a few of his old acquaintances who were familiar with this kind of dealing. Belle went across to their house to keep Carson company, but they were both jumpy knowing that Norma-Jeane had likely been taken from here and soon returned to the Monroe's where there was safety in numbers.

Lola was home and after giving Carson an awkward hug she sat down and pretended to do her homework. Carson kept looking to her for comfort, hoping she would be able to distract him with the closeness they'd shared before they'd dated, but Lola just stared at her book, though she never turned a page.

As 10pm approached Ralph returned. His contacts had made subtle enquiries within the local criminal circles and as far as they could tell it was an unknown person working alone. Their best hope was for Marlie to keep the appointment and to go "alone" with Ralph concealing himself in the area to protect her and to try and trail the kidnapper to wherever he was holding Marilyn.

Brody began to protest, insisting that he should go instead of Marlie, or at least with her but Marlie placed her hand on his heart and quietly told him that she had to go.

'Brody I need to do this but I need you to be here protecting the children. Ralph will be armed and this kidnapper - whoever he is - wont hurt me if it stops him from getting whatever he wants. If the worst were to happen, which it won't, but IF it did, I need to know that you're here and safe to raise our family.'

Brody could see from her expression that there would be no arguing so as night fell he barricaded himself and his family inside the house and watched Marlie drive away.

As her lights faded into the distance the phone rang. He snatched it up.

An official sounding female voice asked if this was the residence of Marlie Monroe.

'It is,but she'd not home' Brody replied. 'This is her husband, can I take a message'.

'Certainly. Could you please inform your wife that her father is in violation if his parole. We last recorded him crossing state lines between Nevada and Utah but haven't been able to locate him. Should he make contact we need you to call it in. We believe him to be armed and possibly a threat to those around him'.

As the call ended Brody just stared at the phone in horror. Could this all be linked to Marlie's father?

-------------------------------
10pm at the Route Four Water Treatment Facility

Marlie shivered as she walked deeper into the old water treatment plant, she couldn't see any sign of another person and the only thing stopping her from turning and running was the knowledge that this was their best hope to see Norma-Jeane safe. Knowing that Ralph was less that 100 feet away with an automatic and night vision was also a comfort.

'Well hello there sweet girl! Keep your hands where I can see 'em - I dont want this little reunion to be disturbed', came a disembodied voice. Marlie froze. It couldn't be......

Following the voice she looked up to the top of the abandoned building. Standing there, older, scarred but recognisable was Hank Monroe.

'What no greeting for your old Man, Marlie-Dee. Didn't your whore of a momma teach you better than that?'

'Don't you dare mention my mom', spat Marlie as anger began to burn up the fear which had been controlling her. 'What the hell do you want with me and with Norma-Jeane?'

Hank laughed, 'Straight to the point I see, you're more like me than I thought. Honey, we both know her name ain't Norma-Jeane. And that changes things.'

Marlie was fuming. 'I am NOTHING like you.'

Hank just laughed again.

'Whatever you say Marlie-Dee. See when I got done serving time I decided to see if I could track down your momma, her and I had some.... let's call it unfinished business, so I found that sleazy old senator guy that she was fooling around with and I "convinced" him to tell me everything, .

That's when it got tricky. He told me your momma was dead. Can't say I was surprised given her ways but said he'd been looking for his bastard daughter for years, he's about to run for president see and he wanted her, well, tidied up. I volunteered my services. For a price.

Imagine my surprise when I find her in the ass end of Utah, playing at happy families with you Marlie-Dee. It was like I'd hit the jackpot. I grabbed her, meaning to get my money and then see how you and I could work together but turns out that Mr Big-Shot's lovechild is kind of a valuable asset.

Imagine what people would pay to have Missy Marilyn Monroe  back. Or perhaps what people would pay to keep her as their own special pet. Suddenly Mr Big-Shot's money is looking like the lesser offer.

Anyhow, before I offer her to the open market I figured that you might be amenable to seeing how much that husband of hers might want to offer for her safe return.

I'll give you 24 hours - for old times sake, be back here with cash at the same time tomorrow.

Oh and Marlie... don't be calling in any police, I'd hate to have to hurt one of my sweet grand-babies.'

Without another word Hank disappeared back from the edge of the building leaving Marlie shaken and disbelieving. She struggled to compose herself before staggering back to her car where she dialled the home number.

'Marlie is that you?' Brody barked, 'I think it's your dad, come home right away'.

Hearing his voice, the last of Marlie's strength crumbled and she burst into tears, sobbing into the phone everything that she'd discovered.

'I just can't believe that I came from that monster Brody,' she cried, 'What kind of person thinks that way.'

'Come home baby,' Brody soothed. 'It will be okay, Ralph will follow him and we will find Norma-Jeane. As soon as she's safe we can call the parole board and Hank will be back in jail for the rest of his life'.

------------------------

Ralph

Ralph hung back in the deep shade. He'd been following the man he now knew to be Hank Monroe for the best part of an hour. The man was good. He'd doubled back on himself, taken shortcuts and stopped to see if anyone was behind him several times. If it wasn't for those years on the run Ralph knew he'd have lost him.

A profound hatred burned in Ralph's heart for this man who in so many ways was the root of the misery which had plagued his wife's life. His automatic was heavy in his hand and it was only the knowledge that he needed this man to lead him to Norma's side that stopped him from ending this right now.

Finally Hank turned off the track they'd been following, heading into some thick woodland before disappearing through the door of a gloomy looking shed which was almost invisible under the trees.

Ralph knew that the moment had come. He called Marlie, letting her know the address in case this went down badly. Then he slowly, carefully checked his gun was loaded, clicked off the safety and quietly approached the house.

A cursory glance through the tiny window revealed a dank, sparsely furnished room. A heavy rug was rolled back revealing an open trap door. As Ralph watched Hank Monroe emerged from the basement, slamming and locking the door and rolling back the rug. As he walked to the far end of the room and placed his gun on the sofa before rifling in the fridge Ralph crept to the the door and, mustering all the force in his body, kicked it down.

Marlie - The Cabin in the Woods

She ran towards the sound, losing all sense of her own safety and approached the cabin only to discover that death had beaten her there.
